Steps to Easy troubleshooting

  1. Check the cables
    1. Make sure all of the cables are secure in the monitor, back of the computer and into the power strip, or wall outlet.
    2. Make sure the power strip is on
    3. Make sure all of the cables are plugged in securely
  2. Make sure its turned on
    1. Both the computer and monitor need to be on for the computer to function correctly
  3. Make sure the monitor is on the correct input.
    1. Most computer at the library are on “Analog” or Input 1
  4. Check the input
    1. Does the caps lock key turn on when you hit caps lock
      1. If this does not happen, then the computer is locked up and needs to be restarted
    2. Is there a red light under the mouse?
      1. If there is no light then the mouse is probably bad, but to be sure check step 1 again.
  5. Reboot
    1. A lot of problems can be fixed by rebooting a windows machine.

Steps to check before making a ticket

  1. Does the problem happen more than once?
  2. Does the problem happen with more than just one user on the same machine?
  3. Does the problem happen on more than one machine?
  4. Does the problem follow the specific user that has the problem after you had them try a different PC?
    1. If yes then the user is causing the issue and there maybe a fix. Include all the information you can get from the user about what they were doing, and what they wanted to do in the ticket.
  5. Does the problem happen on the same machine at different times of the day?
  6. Does the problem always happen at the same time of the day?
  7. Is the error message always the same?
    1. Did you write it down?
    2. If the error messages are different or are rotating between a few make sure you include all of the error messages and when they appear, and what the user is doing when they do apear.

If you have more than 1 yes on the questions above then make a ticket, and include what you checked, and the error message if there is one. Please include the full error message and it is important. Always try the steps at the start of this document before making a ticket, as some things can be resolved by simple steps.
